The third professional studies lecture had another guest speaker from the TV industry who specialized in news reporting and had worked for the Chris Coneybeer.

Although news reporting is not in my chosen choice’s of jobs i would like to work in, i did however i find it very insightful listening to how there are certain conventions that make up an almost universal form in creating news reports. Chris made us watch several news reports and pointed out areas that we would have to focus on, one of the most important was thinking about the edit. what shots would we need? get shots that matched what people in the interviews talked about, getting “beautiful” shots, that titles or stats that could be added in later.

Charlie Brooker mocks the conventions of news reporting in this video…

Chris also pointed out that if we are working free lance as news reporters and crew, then we need to be prepared to stay with the story until we have sufficient material to make a report that will make it on to news channels. He explained that after doing the job for awhile it would become almost second nature to know exactly what we need before we leave, as we would know what makes up the conventions of the report and therefore spend less time trying to find and think about what we need rather than getting it. We were also told about issues around filming stories that could be or are presently in court as people whom are involved are not allowed to give out information to news and press as it could effect court procedures.

Over all I still don’t think that news reporting would be for me as its has never interested me and still doesn’t. I like to be organised and know what im  filming weeks in advance i.e, working on a  TV show or film. Filming news reports seems to be too touch and go and i don’t know whether i like the idea of free lancing something like that. There are so many press crews covering the same story, it would seem that the competition is extremely high. I did however find Chris’s lecture every insightful and made me think about different areas of film that I should investigate.
